Alopecia areata is the most common type of hair loss and according to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, there are more than 4.7 million people in the U.S. who are affected by this type of hair loss. This condition starts with hair loss in small, round patches on the scalp. However, a research which was published in the November 1998 issue of the Archives of Dermatology entitled “Randomized Trial of Aromatherapy: Successful Treatment for Alopecia Areata,” showed that lavender, cedar wood, thyme and rosemary can naturally treat hair loss and they are proven to be successful. Dried leaves of these herbs can be used to create a simple herbal remedy which can be applied on the scalp after shampooing and conditioning your hair. Read on and learn the procedure on how to create herbal preparations for hair loss.
Step #1: Preparing What You Need
In this procedure, you will need a couple of things like 1 tsp dried lavender, 1 tsp dried cedar wood, 1 tsp dried thyme and 1 tsp dried rosemary. You will also need materials such as tea strainer, an 8-ounce glass jar with lid, 8 ounces of boiling water and a spray bottle but this is optional.
Step #2: Preparing Your Herbs
Measure each of the herbs mentioned above at 1 teaspoon. Use a tea strainer going to the 8 ounces glass jar.
Step #3: Using the Boiling Water
After you’ve placed all of them inside the glass jar, pour boiling water into the jar until the water is about one-quarter of an inch from the top of the jar. Then put the lid to cover the jar so that the herb’s essential oils will not evaporate.
Step #5: Steeping the Herbs
Give the herbs enough time to saturate. Give at least 15 minutes as the longer they steep, the stronger the infusion is. Remove the strainer from the jar with the use of a spoon then replace the lid on the jar and place it in a cool place to settle. Be sure to keep it in one place away from direct light.
Step #5: Transferring the Herbal Preparation
As soon as the infusion has cooled down, you can now transfer it from the glass into a spray bottle for convenience. Shampoo and condition your hair first before applying the solution and do not rinse it out.
Step #6: Taking a Few More Tips
To make the solution more effective, you can add a few drops of each of the herb’s essential oils. You can purchase these essential oils at several health food stores. So as to extend the life of the infusion, you can place it in the refrigerator. If you are using prescribed medication for your alopecia, you have to consult with your doctor first about the use of these herbs or any herbal remedy because there are herbs that have negative reaction with medication and can create adverse effects.
These are steps to follow when making an herbal preparation for hair loss. All you need are a few herbs and some efforts to make the solution worth a try.
